Humboldt Beach, Chicago’s only inland urban beach, has been closed for a long time, but the Chicago Parks Department announced it plans to reopen for the first time in four years later this month.
Humboldt Beach will officially reopen to the public at 11 a.m. on Monday, June 17, to coincide with the opening of the city’s outdoor pool, according to the park service.
The beach, located in the 1400 block of North Sacramento Avenue, will be fully staffed with lifeguards, which the city’s parks department credits to a hiring campaign that will help alleviate a lifeguard shortage that has plagued the city in recent years.
“Thanks to our hugely successful seven-month ‘Summer Jobs for You’ recruitment campaign that has enabled us to fill Humboldt Park Beach with lifeguards, we are confident that our lifeguard shortage is finally over and our beaches and pools will be fully staffed and open for swimming all summer long,” said Chicago Parks Department CEO Rosa Escareno.
Lifeguards are on duty at Humboldt Beach from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily, and information about beach swimming conditions is available on the park district’s website. Website. Admission to Humboldt Beach is free.
Parks Department officials said vegetation has been removed from the swimming area of the beach and the sand has been prepared in preparation for backfilling next week, and a water quality testing service in collaboration with the UIC School of Public Health will also begin soon.
The Chicago Parks Department offers the following advice to beachgoers:
- Please dispose of trash in the containers provided.
- Please refrain from feeding the birds.
- Small children should wear waterproof swim pants.
- Keep your dog away from water and beaches.
