In the Lake District, on the banks of the vast Lake Windermere, Britain’s largest lake, I stand and wonder if I’m dreaming or if I’m awake. Before leaving this little niche of happiness, it is inevitable to reflect on her two days spent in this beautiful town.
out and about
The three-and-a-half-hour train journey from London to Windermere was a real pleasure. I remember arriving in the town dizzyingly expecting some rumored beauty. Hurry up and check into The Water Head Inn, which overlooks the famous Lake Windermere. Once settled, we ventured out onto the town’s cobbled lanes. The old cottage looked whimsical, but the traditional cafe looked charming. Hmm. I will never forget my meal of bangers and mashed potatoes or sausage and mashed potatoes with onion sauce. After a hearty lunch, we decided to drop down the rabbit hole of the Beatrix Potter attraction. In this magical world, you can experience everything from his virtual reality to a walk in a forest glade. Piglin story.
cruising
Then in the evening we took a lakeside walk before boarding the Lake Windermere cruise to Ambleside. Those were the best 80-90 minutes of my life. . The next day, I was already excited about the new experience.
About poets and peace
An early morning walk on the trails of Windermere is great! There are several versions of the walk. Please choose the one that suits you best. The crisp morning air set us up for the rest of the day. Sunrise over the lake is indescribable as the sky is filled with warm colors. Rejuvenated, I made my way to the boat dock where the boat was waiting for anyone who wanted to ride. Calm water never ceases to evoke tranquility.
After breakfast, we visited Dove Cottage, the home of William Wordsworth. It’s a must if you come here. After Wordsworth came along, English poetry wasn’t what it used to be. A tour of the house reveals a very visual story about the legendary poet. Here you can take a closer look at his humble life and inspirations. The simple Museum Coffee Shop at Dove Cottage is open to all.
By the Castle and the Inn
After visiting Dove Cottage, it was time to visit Wray Castle, one of Windermere’s most majestic architectural and historical sites. The history of this castle is unique and its roles are very diverse. It wasn’t much of a home for the original owner. Instead, it was a hostel, with offices of all kinds, and at one point hosted famed author, illustrator, and conservationist Helen Beatrix Potter. , I needed a boost of energy, so I visited yet another local joint, notably the Old John Peel Inn, which serves great beer and traditional fish and chips. Then, at the end of the day, we went for a walk to the lakefront and Ambleside Pier to reflect on our short trip and plan our return to Windermere.
