Every time the words “restructuring,” “merger,” “acquisition,” or “hostile acquisition,” spread across the office, there is a fearful effect on every company. Employees work on their resumes, whispering about anticipated layoffs and assessing their options.
We are now seeing the same phenomenon unfold in our country’s capital. Since taking over last month, President Donald Trump has committed to blitzing through the federal sector to rewind waste, cut ideological programs and bringing financial sanity back to American governance. Republican presidents have long promised to “reduce the size of their government,” but they have usually failed to do so – bureaucracy always wins. This may be different this time.
The second Trump administration has been surprisingly offensive in its efforts to reform federal agencies, including a controlled demolition of USAID and a bold acquisition plan for government officials. Additionally, Elon Musk, the president’s leader in the Government Efficiency Bureau, has a long track record of successful, sometimes extreme cost reductions. For example, when Musk took over Twitter, he fired 80% of his employees, simultaneously improving the product and improving profitability.

The next stage of the conflict between Trump and the bureaucracy appears to be the Department of Education. This is correctly identified by the President as a breeding ground for left-wing ideology. Almost every Republican presidential candidate since 1980 has pledged to reduce or abolish the division, but their budgets are on the rise.

When Trump made the same promise on the campaign trail last year, I was skeptical. But Musk changes the calculation. The high-tech entrepreneur has already routed USAID and sent his Doge engineers to investigate the DOE, as we can confirm from my own reports. The department, as a public institution, does not have the same type of balance sheet as a company, but it still breaks and needs to be shut down in the end.
What is the best way to proceed? The administration must first understand that the Ministry of Education manages three main activities. University students’ loans and grants. K-12 funding; and ideological productions that include a variety of programs, grants, civil rights initiatives and third-party NGOs that create left-wing content to push local schools. It is impossible or undesirable to shut down all three functions at the same time. Rather, Education Secretary Candidate Linda McMahon should work with Musk and Doji to handle each individually.
First, the department must spin off all university student loans and subsidize independent financial institutions. The federal government is currently messing up $1.6 trillion on student loans and issues another $110 billion in student aid each year. This is a huge portfolio that requires a set of dedicated managers, risk analysts and cost cutters. These experts need to reform their student loan portfolios, return to as many private markets as possible, and limit the total number of loans that are partially liable for administrative bloats and student debt crisis.
Second, the administration should work with Congress to block the Department of Education’s K-12 funding programme to the state. The sector sends around $100 billion each year to state governments and local school districts, often with nasty restrictions and harsh ideological conditions.
For example, the Biden administration has tried to use this federal massive mass to push racial and gender politics into local school districts. Rather than justifying departmental enforcement, the administration tallies K-12 spending for all sectors, divides it into state populations, spending the results to each state with little or no strings attached. You need to. The state can continue to use this fund for diet, low-income schools and special education, but it also allows for flexibility in the best way to suit local needs.
Third, Trump must close the Department of Education’s ideological production centers and terminate the employment of the bureaucrats who run them. These groups become hotbeds of progressive identity politics, promoting the theory of “systemic racism” and the idea that men can be transformed into women. However, as it did regularly between 1932 and 1984, it is unlikely that the Ministry of Education will end the agreement without specific laws, or at least to delegate the reorganization agency to the President.

Public support is an important consideration when enacting bold reforms. To maintain American recognition, the Trump administration must explain that college students can still receive loans. K-12 schools still receive funding for special education programs, and civil rights are protected by the Department of Justice. This allows us to focus on eliminating the ideology of the left, which has been deeply unpopular and disparate, as Musk has already done with USAID.
The time has come. The president is his first 100 days, and major changes are best enacted when the administration enjoys high public recognition. Mask also understands that hesitance is an indication of weakness. Abolish the Ministry of Education and don’t look back.
