Discord is a text, voice and chat messenger, also known as a social media site, that has become extremely popular in the streaming world as its features continue to improve. The app is essentially a premium version of AOL Instant Messenger, with more features and user controls. It has been all the rage in the gaming industry lately, allowing content creators to streamline all their social media and fan communications.
Now it’s natively on the PlayStation 5, allowing chat and voice chat between players across essentially all platforms. And it’s about to add another big feature: all-radio application TuneIn. Anyone in a Discord voice chat can play their favorite live or local radio stations and podcasts to their friends on the platform. That means with the click of a button, anyone can become a DJ in one of the world’s most popular online meeting spaces.
Fox News spoke with TuneIn CEO Rich Stern, who explained that the process is pretty simple: “In any voice chat on the Discord platform, you’ll see a little icon that looks like a rocket,” Stern said. “When you press it, it launches your Tunein activity for over 100,000 radio stations and over 5 million podcasts.”
It also enables sharing, with the first user to click the icon taking on the role of DJ, but other users can take over via voice chat. This is just one of TuneIn’s ongoing integration plans. Stern said, “We’ve created the technology and platform that enables integrations and makes it all work seamlessly behind the scenes for our partners. So you’ll see more communities like Discord and apps like Discord bringing radio experiences.”
