The wait for the release of the highest-grossing Minions franchise hasn’t been that long: After the fresh and successful debut of the sequel, Despicable Me 4, the creators have announced that Minions 3 is scheduled for release in June 2027.
Written by Brian Lynch, the sequel to the series will be directed by Pierre Coffin (Despicable Me), who has also voiced the Minions since their debut in 2010.
Produced by Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri and Bill Ryan, Minions 3 is executive produced by The Super Mario Bros. Movie.
Nearly a decade after its creation, Minions ranks as the highest-grossing film at the box office with estimated net revenues of over $5 billion, an estimate that includes both Despicable Me and its prequel, Minions.

This critically acclaimed franchise includes the beloved blockbuster hits “Despicable Me,” which was nominated for an Academy Award, and “Despicable Me 3,” which has grossed more than $1 billion.
Minions: Gru Strikes Back is one of the highest-grossing sequels in the franchise. Released in 2022, the series dominated the box office, grossing $230 million worldwide.
The huge success of the animated film has also been analysed by media critic Peter DeBerg. variety, DeBerg writes: “Less than a year after the writers’ and actors’ strike shut down Hollywood, kid-friendly animation is a major driver of theater box office take-home. Now my friend (and many like him) might turn a blind eye to these films in favor of campy adult sagas like Furiosa and Horizon. But in a Balbenheimer-free summer (which, let’s be honest, is every summer except 2023), these animated films keep the popcorn flowing and help justify the megaplex’s exorbitant air-conditioning bills.”
