Distinguished Buffalo, NY newscaster and Ball State University alumnus Al Boaters retired from Buffalo’s WIVB News 4 team on June 30, ending a stellar journalism career. June 30th in Buffalo. WYRK reports that his annual Al Vaughters Day was proclaimed by Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown.
Mr. Vaughters spent nearly 30 years as a member of the WIVB News 4 team, serving as a community watchdog journalist on community issues. His journalism achievements have been celebrated and recognized with his induction into the Buffalo Broadcasting Corporation Hall of Fame in 2021.
“I’m just Al. I’m a blue-collar guy who grew up in the Midwest and is trying to do as much work as he can. And when I help people, that’s my job, I help people.” Recent WIVB (Buffalo) Reports about his retirement.
Boaters has become an asset to his community and the newsroom where he worked. He has stayed up late to help distressed Western New Yorkers in situations that didn’t make the news. He is also a board member of the Spirited Athletes Bold at Heart (SABAH) and co-founder and vice president of the Buffalo Association of Black Journalists, reports WIVB.
“I want people to know that this man is a treasure,” WIVB anchor and reporter Jackie Walker said of Vaughters. He is a treasure as a person. He is a treasure as a reporter. This community benefits from his many hours of work. ”
Mr. Vaughters’ career began with a stint in Indianapolis radio. He then got a job in television in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Dayton, Ohio. Providence, Rhode Island; and Chicago. Mr. Boaters joined Buffalo News 4 in August 1994.
At Ball State, Mr. Vaughters earned a BA in Radio and Television. He was also a student-athlete on his team in ball state football and received a letter in 1973.
