WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) – A 6-year-old Wichita boy had big plans for the money he made selling his paintings.
On the occasion of Krishnam Ambel’s sixth birthday on March 5, he sold the art to family and friends. He had no intention of keeping that money for himself.
“One day he came home and asked, ‘Can I sell my work?'” And I said to him, “What do you want to do with the money that’s left over? ” he asked. And he said, “Can I donate? ”’ said Ambel’s mother Moumita Kundu.
According to her, Ambel has always loved being a firefighter.
“The firefighters go to his school every year. They teach him about fire safety and emergency safety and things like that. So he’s been into firefighters since he was 2 years old. He’s always been a firefighter. I love firefighter books, I wore a firefighter costume for three years on Halloween, and I never want to give that up,” Kundu said. .
Ambel decided to donate the proceeds to the Wichita Fire Department. He raised $120 and donated the funds to the Wichita Fire Foundation on Friday.
“A 6-year-old boy from our area wanted to draw and sell pictures to give back to the fire department,” said WFD Firefighter Chad McKernan. “The Foundation learned of this and wanted to give something in return for his kind heart.”
Ambel met some firefighters at the station and was excited to see how the truck worked until he turned on the lights.
“[He] I really liked driving a fire truck. I don’t drive cars much anymore but that was my favorite job so he enjoyed turning on the lights and seeing how it worked and it was great . I’ve always loved fire engines since I was a kid and always wanted to know how they worked, so he was always very intrigued by all the things that made me happy.” said McKernan. “That makes us really happy. We want to be involved with the community.”
Kundu is a proud mother.
“I was so amazed that he could come up with something like that and think about donating it and giving back to the community. At the age of six, it means so much. It means a lot to me to think like that,”’ Kundu said. “I said to him today, “If you have good intentions, other people will come and support you.” That meant a lot, and it’s important to him that he will continue to do so. “It means a lot because it’s a big life lesson. As a mother, I’m very proud of him,” she said.
