Quarterbacks don’t often flatten defenders with blindside blocks, but Browns quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson did in Thursday night’s preseason game.
As Browns running back Demetric Felton ran the ball, Thompson-Robinson ran toward Eagles safety Terrell Edmunds and slammed him to the ground. This was unusual for a quarterback, illegal play for anyone, and Thompson Robinson was charged with a personal foul in a blindside block. Thompson Robinson later admitted he was wrong, but he said he always wanted to do everything in his power to help his teammates.
“I have a sweet spot in Feldt. When he has the ball, I want to stick my nose in it. But Stefanski definitely let me do it after that game. There are no penalties, we will definitely have to work on that going forward,” said Thompson-Robinson.
Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski admitted he told Thompson Robinson he couldn’t penalize the team with a 15-yard penalty, but he also said he liked the young quarterback’s approach.
“I didn’t like that penalty and I know the rule that he can’t block. I love how hard this kid is. He loves to be shy and his teammates like it, but he doesn’t like to damage the team with penalties,” Stefanski said.
Thompson Robinson, a rookie fifth-round pick from UCLA, impressed in the preseason and proved he deserves a roster pick. Even if he was a little too eager to make a play when he threw that block.
