Why did Rihanna spend so much time in the air?
Many Super Bowl performers like Lady Gaga and P!nk went all out for their performance, and Rihanna was no exception.
When she and her creative team were told they could perform safely in the air while being supported by trusses strong enough to hold a freight train, they quickly jumped on the idea. .
The idea itself came from Bruce Rodgers, the creative director and production designer of the Super Bowl for the past 16 years. Rogers suggested multiple reasons.
First, doing most of the performance in the air means the crew doesn’t need to have a large stage on the field. This left the turf on the field undamaged and allowed Chiefs and Eagles players to continue playing safely in the second half.
It also took only about 7.5 minutes to set everything up and 6 minutes to unload everything, making things much easier for the crew when everything needed to be quickly moved in and out of the field.
How was the stage and platform built?
Multiple factors had to be considered when building the stage and LED-lit platform for Rihanna, her 80 dancers and seven band members to perform.
To minimize the weight of the stage on the field, it had to consist of no more than 15 rolling structures. Also, due to the size and shape of the tunnels in State Farm Stadium, we needed stairs that could be tilted up for transportation.
Each structure varied in shape and size, with smaller ones measuring 10 by 24 feet and weighing about 2,000 pounds, and larger ones measuring 8 by 31 feet and weighing about 4,000 pounds. Also, they each had turf tires that allowed them to gently roll along the field without ruining the grass.

As far as the platforms themselves are concerned, each platform measures approximately 10 x 17.5 feet. In the first half of the game, all 7 floating stages had to be stored in a truss above the field.
Then, at halftime, each had to move to a performance position on a synthetic cable (all 7 minutes). After the performance, they were returned to the truss until the end of the game.
Is this a new performance for the halftime show?
Rihanna’s performance could be the first of many halftime show performances to take place this way. Not only is it a very entertaining vision for the audience and viewers at home, but it also minimizes the impact on the field, which is primarily what the NFL is concerned about.
