An image purporting to show quadruplets celebrating their 90th birthday has been celebrated on social media, despite being completely fabricated.
The artificial intelligence-generated image was posted to Facebook last week and has since garnered more than 180,000 reactions.
“We are quadruplets. Today we turn 90. Looking forward to all your celebrations,” the caption reads.
The account from which the image was posted, “Little babies,” has around 24,000 followers and regularly posts AI-generated content. While most of the account’s posts don’t usually garner much attention, the image, which shows four purported sisters, quickly went viral.
The nearly 72,000 comments on this photo show just how many people have fallen for this ploy.
“Happy birthday and God bless you all,” one user replied.
“So amazing!,” another added. “Happy birthday to all the queens.”
Despite the widespread attention it has received, the image has yet to be flagged as fake by Facebook. The Daily Dot reached out to Facebook’s parent company, Meta, to inquire about the image but did not receive a response at the time of writing.
However, there were also several comments from users who were not fooled by the AI-generated images.
“We’re all AI,” one user wrote. “Stop celebrating birthdays.”
“AI generated image!!!” a third user commented.
Some users pointed out irregularities in the photo, such as the length of her limbs and problems with her fingers.
“AI will destroy us,” one user pointed out. “But why are the arms so long?”
The AI images have not only caused confusion online, but have also made many skeptical, leading countless people to believe that the real images are fake.
But AI imagery can also cause damage even when manipulation is obvious.
For example, in January, explicit AI-generated images of pop star Taylor Swift garnered tens of millions of views online.
