ENGLEWOOD — The 49ers found a way to leave Los Angeles with a 30-23 win over the Rams, but there was definitely a pass attempt that quarterback Brock Purdy would like to get back.
Unusually, the second-year play-caller defeated wide receivers Brandon Aiyuk, Deebo Samuel and Jauan Jennings in separate games Sunday. All three failures will stick with Purdy for some time.
“Yeah, probably a lot,” Purdy said after the game. “I just beat them. One to BA, one to Devo, and him to JJ on third down. Those are on me. Instead of trying to get better and beat them. You have to strike in your stride. Simple as that.”
Most importantly, Purdy and the 49ers offense found a way to rack up points and secure an important NFC West victory. But Purdy continues to build chemistry with his receivers and will take part in a short week of practice before facing the New York Giants on “Thursday Night Football” in Week 3.
“We have four days to prepare for the next game,” Purdy said. “In my eyes, it looked like there were some missed chances, in terms of deep balls and stuff. But we found a way to win.”
Coach Kyle Shanahan responded diplomatically to the quarterback’s mistake. He wanted to see Purdy connect with his receivers, and although he understood why the play wasn’t seamless, he reiterated that he wanted to see Purdy “tear apart.”
“It was all tough,” Shanahan said. “Aiyuk’s ship was probably the toughest one for him, because No. 1 sailed with a read. In Devo, he was all over the board and had a very tough read. And You want to hit it, but he missed it.
“I didn’t really care about that to Jennings. I was a little surprised the ball went out there. Everyone else was covered, so you just want to make plays.”
Shanahan was quick to point out that the most important aspect of Purdy’s performance was ball safety. The lack of turnovers by the offense and two takeaways by the 49ers defense clearly tipped the scales in San Francisco’s favor. Shanahan was happy with his quarterback’s decision.
Of course, Purdy has recently been recovering from a torn UCL, so there are questions before the 2023 season begins about how his March surgery will affect his arm strength and accuracy on the field this season. there were. Purdy is confident his mistake had nothing to do with his previous injury.
“No, I don’t think so,” Purdy said. “We focus on deep balls in practice and everything else. The only thing that matters is being able to throw accurately when the bullet is in flight and not knocking it over. Don’t outsmart your opponent, just hit the target. Please shoot.
“That’s what you have to do as a quarterback in the NFL, and I’m taking it upon myself.”
Purdy and the 49ers offense have just a few days to practice deep passing before Thursday’s home opener at Levi’s Stadium.
