Artificial intelligence (AI) is changing the world as we know it. OpenAI’s ChatGPT reached 100 million monthly active users in just two months after its launch, making it the fastest-growing consumer application in history, according to a January 2023 UBS study.
In higher education, the rise of AI text generators and chatbots is causing faculty and administrators to rethink their institutions’ curriculum and policies.
ChatGPT has raised concerns that it not only hinders student learning but also increases opportunities for cheating and plagiarism. According to a BestColleges survey, 51% of college students believe that using AI tools in academic work constitutes cheating or plagiarism. But her 1 in 5 students use it.
AI isn’t going anywhere. It is up to students to decide the role of AI within their learning. Here are his three ways parents can help their students use AI.
What is artificial intelligence (AI)?
First, encourage students to explore ways to use AI to support and improve learning, rather than as a shortcut or a way to reduce workload.
Educators across the country have expressed concern that AI tools will hinder the development of students’ critical thinking, research, writing, and communication skills, making them less employable.
But when used properly, AI can improve students’ thinking, problem-solving, and other skills, making them stand out in the workplace. Additionally, many employers are already looking for candidates who know how to use AI to improve productivity.
At Southeastern University (SEU), where I am the president, we introduced a course on ChatGPT to ensure that students learn how to use AI text generators effectively and responsibly.
If done right, AI can benefit students and parents.
In this class, students will learn the basics of prompt engineering: structuring prompts in a way that AI can understand so they can produce clearer, more useful results. In doing so, students practice critical thinking skills by questioning their own thought processes and reflecting on the steps required to perform a particular action.
The ultimate goal is for students to use this ability to further engage with other courses and deepen their understanding of the material they are studying.
Encourage students to use AI to brainstorm ideas, organize notes, and create study guides for their courses. With the right encouragement and direction, ChatGPT can help students engage with course material and improve their critical thinking without sacrificing it.
Next, encourage students to use AI responsibly.
To ensure academic integrity and help students get the most out of their courses, they should first find out from their professors when and if they are allowed to use AI.

SEU has added a Generative AI Assistance Policy that requires students to first check with their professor to see if the use of ChatGPT and similar tools is acceptable when completing a project.
However, it stipulates that AI tools may not be used on in-class exams or assignments unless explicitly directed by the professor. When it comes to out-of-class projects, we trust our faculty to judge their usefulness.
We also recognize that AI tools may need to be strictly prohibited, especially as they relate to licensing and certification exams. In such cases, the restrictions will be clearly stated within the course syllabus.
Encourage students to review their university’s overall AI policy and read each instructor’s syllabus and specific course guidelines. Encourage them to speak directly with their professors, ask questions, and get feedback and advice on how to use her AI responsibly in the classroom.

That way, students can feel confident that they are excelling and know that they are following the professor’s guidelines for the upcoming semester.
Third, always encourage students to cite ChatGPT or other chatbots. Just as you credit authors and publications on assignments and essays to avoid plagiarism, it’s important to do the same for AI tools.
When citing ChatGPT or other AI, students must save a transcript of the chat and include it in their project for instructor or grader reference. You should also describe the prompt that generated the response and include the date you accessed the AI tool. Even if a student is using AI tools simply to get inspired and generate ideas, it is important to evaluate the resources used.

Many professors use Turnitin or other services to detect plagiarism. Although this is still a fairly new technology, we are learning how to detect the use of AI. By attributing the AI, students can avoid being penalized for plagiarism or using the AI. It also helps you practice staying accountable for how you use these new tools.
Remember, AI is a tool similar to software like spell check or Grammarly. This helps students enhance their learning, improve critical thinking, and engage with course material in new ways. AI tools can enhance students’ education by encouraging them to follow university guidelines and professor instructions, while maintaining academic integrity.
