1.) Beehive
This has to be one of the most unique and interesting parliament buildings on the planet, and probably Wellington’s biggest must-see.
Designed and constructed between 1964 and 1979, the building is relatively new, and it’s not surprising that opinions are so divided. It’s not your average official building. After admiring the unique shape and exploring the gardens, take a free tour inside.

2.) City Gallery Wellington & Cake
If you look at City Gallery’s beautiful exterior and don’t want to see the splendor of contemporary art housed inside, we don’t know what would.
This historic building was originally the city library, but has been repurposed as one of Wellington’s premier art spaces. Here you can see permanent and temporary exhibitions of contemporary art, as well as numerous talks and performances.

3.) Wellington Waterfront
Located in the heart of the city, the Wellington Waterfront is a beautiful area for a break.
There are plenty of cafes and restaurants to relax in, and you can skate, cycle, or take to the water on a boat for great views of the city.

The modest home of a woman considered New Zealand’s most famous writer, don’t miss the small wooden house where Katherine Mansfield spent her childhood.
It is part of New Zealand’s literary history and has been successfully restored and now operates as a museum of artefacts relating to Mansfield and 19th century history in general.

8.) Wellington Botanic Gardens
You don’t have to be a huge garden fan to enjoy the city’s 25 hectares of hillside designated as Wellington Botanic Gardens.
This area is home to 110 rose beds and many other colorful floral displays for visitors to explore. Also included is a planetarium (Carter Observatory) and a collection of tropical plants in the Begonia House.
9.) Zealandia
If gardens aren’t enough to take you away from the hustle and bustle of the city and you really want to get back to nature, Zealandia is the place for you. Incredibly, this 225-hectare environmental reserve is just 2 kilometers from the city centre.
This area is home to many of New Zealand’s wildlife and is perfect for some wildlife spotting. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the kiwi bird or the famous tuatara.
10.) Colonial Cottage Museum
No sightseeing tour of Wellington would be complete without seeing the city’s oldest surviving original cottage. Built in the 1850s by William Wallis as his family home, you’ll be amazed at how well preserved it is.
The house and its original furniture and fixtures are important relics of New Zealand’s pioneering days and can be seen on guided tours held several times a day.

11.) Mt Victoria
Once you’ve finished enjoying Wellington up close, climb Mt Victoria for stunning views of the city. It is worth enduring strong winds at the observation deck.
Don’t miss the Byrd Monument, built to commemorate Richard Byrd, the American who made the first flight over the South Pole from New Zealand in 1929.

If you’d like to spend a day outside the city, hop aboard the Interislander and visit the South Island and its stunning natural scenery.
