Croatia is a wonderful country to explore and one of Europe’s great jewels. Whether you’re visiting for the first time, your 50th time, or your millionth time, we guarantee you that Croatia has tons of great places you’ve never experienced.
This country has a little bit of everything: beautiful islands, historic cities, and beautiful coastlines. Simply put, you’ll find at least one reason to visit Croatia.
Well, if you’re renting a car or staying near the sea, we hope to show you some of the best places in Croatia beyond Dubrovnik.
Below are some of my favorite spots. You are almost guaranteed to have a great time exploring the best places in Croatia.
1.) Dubrovnik

Well, first we will introduce Dubrovnik, the most popular spot in Croatia.
Dubrovnik is known as a gorgeous walled city dating back to the Middle Ages, and more recently as the setting for Game of Thrones.
Dubrovnik is located on the sparkling Dalmatian Coast, on the shores of the Adriatic Sea. When you’re here, be sure to explore the city walls, stroll through Stradun, and visit the Lovrijenac Fortress.
If you want to enjoy a spectacular sunset, stop by Buza Bar and watch the city transform under the orange hues. Dubrovnik quickly ranks as one of the best places to visit in Croatia and is a city worth spending a few days exploring.
Also, a great place to stay. Hotel Excelsior It’s right in the city.

2.) Terashika
Located on the island of Dugi Otok, this bay is also a protected natural park with towering cliffs, a lagoon, and secret little coves.
Stretching over 10 kilometers in length, this island is a great place to explore by boat, especially its charming coves and small beaches. The largest city nearby is Zadar, which is a convenient place for a city break in Croatia.

3.) Lastovo Island
If you want a taste of traditional Croatia, you’ll want to head straight to Lastovo Island. This is one of the best places to visit in Croatia and will instantly make you feel like you have traveled back in time. It feels like you came 300 years ago…and it’s amazing.
The island is also covered in lush forests and rugged coastline, making it a must-visit destination for hiking enthusiasts. That said, be sure to spend some time in Lastovo Old Town as well. This is a really beautiful place.
4.) Mljet Island
Not far from Dubrovnik, the island of Mljet consists of a protected area of national parkland and is also home to the quaint St. Mary’s Monastery.
Once here, explore the beautiful coastline, take a dip in the water and enjoy the lovely relaxing atmosphere of Mljet Island.
5.) Zagreb
Zagreb, the capital of Croatia, is well known as ‘The Secret’. Away from the coast, Zagreb is one of the best places to visit in Croatia, even if you’re not that into the Adriatic side.
When you’re here, be sure to explore the cobblestone streets, visit the Upper Town, and explore Tokalčičeva. A great spot to spend the weekend.
6.) Love Island
This small island retreat is perfect if you’re looking for a change of pace from Croatia’s popular tourist destinations. Although it is not as popular as places like Dubrovnik, it certainly ranks as one of the best places to visit in Croatia.
When you’re here, be sure to visit Suha Punta Beach, visit Pudarica Beach, and explore Love Town itself. It’s really amazing.
7.) Lopud Island
Easily reached by ferry from Dubrovnik, Lopud Island is covered in crumbling churches and monasteries, making it a great option if you want to get a rustic feel during your vacation, even if it’s just a day trip. It’s one of the best places to visit in Croatia if you don’t have time to explore outside of Dubrovnik.
Once you arrive here, you’ll find a picturesque harbor area and the beautiful beaches of Senji, perfect for a quick city break. Plus, there are some amazing sunsets.
8.) Vis
Once a naval base, the island of Vis was once off-limits to tourists. Now that it’s open, it still retains its sleepy charm and uncharted territory vibe, so if you want to “get away from everyday life” for a little while, it’s definitely worth a visit.
Vis is the perfect island to visit when you want to get away from the crowds. Plus, it’s easily accessible while exploring other larger islands.
9.) Korcula Old Town
Korčula’s main claim to fame is being the birthplace of Marco Polo and being one of the most beautiful walled towns in all of Croatia.
Located on the Peljesac Strait, Korčula is one of the best places to visit in Croatia if you’re a bit of a history buff. When you’re here, be sure to explore the stunning historic buildings built in Venetian style.
These really show the influence of Venice on Croatia (at least historically).

10.) Towns on Hvar Island
Hvar Island is often compared to France’s sunny Saint-Tropez due to its popularity as a premier holiday destination (a good example of this is the number of yachts seen here during the summer). Additionally, there are many ornate buildings, impressive squares, and gorgeous cathedrals waiting to be explored during your visit.
If you’re not into parties, you might want to skip this around Yacht Week. However, if you’re into a pretty decadent party, the best time to plan to stay here is during Yacht Week. The city will change.
11.) Split
This beautiful city is also a favorite for Game of Thrones fans and history buffs.
Once you’re here, Diocletian’s Palace (known to fans as Daenerys Targaryen’s home) is a great place to start before heading to the Old Town and exploring one of the most beautiful towns in all of Europe It’s a place.

12.) Makarska Riviera
If you’re looking for a beach holiday in Croatia, Makarska is the place to go. This port city is full of great restaurants, a beautiful harbor, and great nightlife (there’s even a cave club here).
It’s fairly compact, very walkable and has a beautiful town centre. This is one of the best places to explore in Croatia. Even if he only stays for a day or two, this is a must-visit region in Croatia.
13.) Sorta
This island is easily accessible from Split and is worth combining with a trip to Split. But once you’re here, ditch your car, get a bike (warning – there’s some uphill climbing) and get lost on the island.
This island is a great place to get acquainted with Croatian life, as it is much more relaxing than, say, Split and has some very beautiful country roads that are worth checking out.

14.) Cetina River
The Cetina River is famous for being a place for a little fun and adventure. Even if you’re looking for some relaxing sightseeing, consider going river rafting.
You don’t have to do much here (aside from occasional navigation) as you go with the flow as you immerse yourself in the stunningly beautiful Croatian countryside.
However, if you want to have a more active holiday, don’t worry. There is a place on the river where you can show your strength, so let the person you are going rafting with know your preferences in advance.
15.) Plitvice Lakes National Park
The lakes and waterfalls here are some of the most spectacular in Europe and definitely one of the best in Croatia.
However, be a little careful. Due to its popularity, you’re bound to find yourself sharing the same sights with many like-minded travelers. So if you don’t like crowds, we recommend spending a little extra time planning your visit outdoors. Visit during peak hours or early in the morning.
That said, it’s well worth visiting the crowded area just to enjoy the view.
