There are so many great things to do in the Faroe Islands that you’ll have a hard time finding a starting point. In short, the Faroe Islands are a beautiful little country located between Iceland and Scotland.
And, you know, they’re too good to pass up. These volcanic islands are particularly pristine, well-maintained, and have a completely pristine feel, making them a picture-perfect place to explore.
I’m already itching to go to the Faroe Islands. It was truly amazing.
One of the best ways I’ve found to describe the islands is that they’re like Iceland without a fraction of the tourists. As we explored the island, it felt like we were the only ones here. It felt very idyllic and dreamlike.
Anyway, before I ramble any further, I would like to share a map I created to help you plan the best things to do in the Faroe Islands.

1.) See the puffins of Mykines
You ask who they are. Puffin!
Mykines is a small island on the west coast of Vagar Island. There are two relatively easy ways to get here. The first option is to take a helicopter from a major airport.
The flight takes about 6 minutes and is relatively inexpensive (about $40). Thankfully, you don’t have to break your piggy bank for this helicopter transport.
If you want to avoid the skies, you can also take the ferry to Mykines. Honestly, it would be so fun to see this beautiful little puffin. They aren’t scared at all. A truly unforgettable experience and one of the best things to do in the Faroe Islands.
It is best to visit in the summer, but you will be very disappointed if you visit in the winter when there are no puffins.
2.) Find Mulafoslu Waterfall
Mulafosl Waterfall is about a 20 minute drive from the Faroe Islands’ main airports. Drive west and explore this beautiful coastline and small villages.
If you head here around evening, head to the coast overlooking Tindholmulu Island. Going exploring by car is one of the best things to do in the Faroe Islands.

3.) Hike to Lake Solvaagsvatn
Solvaagsvatn is one of the most dramatic lakes I have ever seen. You literally fall off the edge of the cliff into the ocean below. It takes about an hour to hike to the edge of the cliff (especially from the road), so wear comfortable shoes… I fell face first in a muddy puddle!
Also, a word of warning, these cliffs are very high, so if there’s an Atlantic wind blowing, stay away from the edges. It’s best to be safe (regardless of how cool the photo looks).

4.) Riding the waves around Vestmana
The coastline around Vestmana is a beautiful place of discovery.
Head into the town itself and take a boat tour around the towering cliffs of the Faroe Islands. It’s a beautiful way to spend a few hours exploring this unspoiled landscape.

5.) Find a gorgeous Saxon church
The Saxon Church is a quaint little chapel on the island of Streymoly in the west of the Faroe Islands.
There are several houses around this area and it feels like you are in the middle of nowhere.
Spend an hour exploring nearby areas, waterfalls, and lakes.
Now, how could it be better than this? It really is one of the best things to do in the Faroe Islands.
6.) Explore Fossa Falls, the highest waterfall in the country
Fossa Falls, near Nesvik on Streymoy, is very easy to find, especially since it’s just off one of the island’s main roads.
However, please note that even though it is called a “main road”, only one car runs on it every 15 minutes.

7.) Head to Joguf
After exploring Fossa Falls, drive to Jogóf, a quaint little village on the dramatic coastline.
Stroll around the stunning wooden houses and see the authentic village, which is lovely to visit.

8.) Walk along the beach around Sand
The coves around Sund, just north of the capital Tórshavn, are the perfect place to stop and admire the country’s dramatic landscapes (I know how many times I’ve said dramatic, but really).
Let’s take a walk along the quiet coast. The airport is easily accessible via underground tunnels that penetrate the ocean floor and connect the islands. Surreal, right?

9.) Watch the sunset at Sizradalur
Located on the small island of Kortur, Sizradarur is an attractive location in a region easily accessible from the capital. It takes about 25 minutes by car, so you can easily visit.
The drive here follows an old road that snakes up the mountainside, offering spectacular views, especially at dusk.
10.) Travel around the country on horseback
A little-known fact is that the Faroe Islands have their own breed of horse, which was nearly extinct and is still threatened by the introduction of the Icelandic horse.
We rode Icelandic horses (at this location) when we visited. Apparently Icelandic horses have good personalities, and the local horses bite their lips a bit and seem to be very stubborn (just like me!).

11.) Visit the world’s oldest parliament building
Tinganes is one of the oldest neighborhoods in Tórshavn, the capital of the Faroe Islands. Not only that, but it is also one of the oldest government and parliamentary chambers in the entire world.
With its deep history and historic grass-roofed buildings, it’s a great place to explore while still being in this small city.

12.) Speed across the Atlantic
If you’re looking for an adrenaline-filled experience, come on board. rib 62 A boat departs for the cold North Atlantic.
I swear, it went so fast I couldn’t stop screaming, but it was well worth it as we headed into gorgeous little caves and hard-to-reach coastlines on several small islands.
